Robots are everywhere… but don’t panic!
From Alexa playing your favourite playlist to Netflix recommending the next series you’ll binge, AI has become part of daily life. Even Google search results are now sprinkled with AI summaries, and let’s not forget those spooky shopping ads that just know you need new trainers.
With all this going on, it’s natural to wonder:
- Is AI taking over everything?
- Are real people still needed in market research, even with all this AI around?
- Is my data being fed into a chatbot?
Spoiler alert: nope, we still need you!
AI in the 2020s: From science fiction to supermarket aisles
AI isn’t just the stuff of sci-fi films anymore. It’s in our phones, our homes, and even our self-checkouts. Whether it’s a photo filter that makes you look 20 years younger or Siri answering questions you never thought to ask, AI is everywhere.
And yes, market research is exploring AI too. But before you imagine robots running focus groups – don’t worry. That’s not what’s happening.
So… can AI do market research?
The short answer: yes and no.
Some companies have started experimenting with “synthetic respondents” – computer programs designed to mimic real people and answer surveys. Sounds clever, right?
But here’s the catch: brands don’t sell products to robots. They sell to real people with real lives, feelings, and experiences. That’s why your voice – not a chatbot’s – is what matters. While AI in market research is evolving fast, it still can’t replace the depth and nuance of human insight.

5 reasons AI will never replace real people in market research
1. AI can’t think outside the box
Sure, AI can spot patterns and copy trends. But the magic of market research comes from those surprising, unexpected human insights – the moments when someone says, “I’ve never thought of it that way before!”
2. Authenticity matters more than ever
Brands are crying out for genuine, unfiltered feedback. Your stories, quirks, and lived experiences bring products to life. AI might summarise data neatly, but it can’t capture you.
3. AI doesn’t understand emotion
AI can mimic tone, but it doesn’t feel. Market research often depends on emotions – why something made you smile, annoyed you, or reminded you of your childhood. Sometimes your facial expression or gut reaction says more than your words.
4. You’re not being replaced – you’re being heard
AI tools are mainly used to help researchers analyse answers faster. But your opinions aren’t being turned into “robot food.” We (and our clients) treat your info with respect and care. In fact, AI in market research is mostly used to support researchers, not replace participants.
5. The human touch is still the gold standard
Taste-testing new crisps? Giving feedback on an app? AI can’t do that. Your unique perspective, honesty, and – yes – taste buds are irreplaceable.
