Meet the team: Five minutes with Emma

This week, we sat down with Emma, our Director of Client Services, to find out more about her journey into market research, what she loves most about her role, and the challenges she’s faced.

With nearly 20 years in the industry, Emma brings a wealth of experience and a passion for understanding people that truly shines through in her work. Let’s get to know her better!

Read more about our fabulous team – meet our wonderful director Lisa, Marketing & Community Executive Laura, and Client Services Manager Harry!

Hi Emma! First things first: why did you decide to pursue a career in market research?

I wouldn’t say I pursued a career; I would say it found me! I studied Sociology and Psychology at A-level and English Language at university, so I’ve always been fascinated by human behaviour and why people act or say things in certain ways.

After finishing university, I came across a job as a Project Executive for a research agency, and the role and industry really intrigued me. Fast forward nearly 20 years, and I’m still hooked! It’s clearly been a great fit.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

As Director of Client Services, my favourite part is speaking with our clients. I love hearing people talk about their projects and understanding what they want to achieve from the research. It’s always rewarding when we get the chance to debrief with clients (if the turnaround time allows) to hear about their findings and what actions they’re planning based on our respondents’ feedback. It makes everything we do feel so valued.

What about a challenge you’ve recently faced and how you solved it?

Budget constraints are always a challenge for our clients, and it’s even more so these days! We really value feedback on our costs as it allows us to see if there are ways to adjust our approach while still meeting client needs and maintaining top-level service. When providing costs, we often suggest ‘gold standard’ options where we handle every aspect of the project, but if a client needs to work within a tighter budget, we can adapt and find ways to make it work without compromising on quality.

What are your professional goals for the next year?

I recently returned from maternity leave with my second child, so I’m excited to dive into the year ahead! This industry evolves so quickly, which is something I love, so it’s been great to attend some conferences, catch up on the latest trends, and reconnect with clients.

And how about the next market research industry trend?

It has to be AI! Everyone’s talking, writing, and even worrying about it and how it might impact market research. Like anything new, AI will certainly find its place, but at the end of the day, we will still need to speak to real people—and that’s something I’m holding onto!
